Katonah, NY -- One year ago, Susie Allport was a science writer, promoting her well-received history of the omega-3 research: The Queen of Fats.
Today, she is a baker with a line of delicious, omega-3-rich cookies: Susie’s Smart Cookie.
“It’s much easier to convince people to eat a cookie than read a book,” says Allport, who is both imaginative and tireless in her promotion of the benefits of omega-3s. “And the effect can be even more profound: an immediate change in their essential fats.”
Allport started baking omega-3 cookies for her family, when she adapted favorite family recipes by substituting canola oil and flax seed meal for more traditional fats. Soon friends were asking for these high omega-3 treats, and she saw the opportunity of creating a business. She got much of the practical advice she needed from Cornell University’s Food Entrepreneurship Center in Geneva, NY.
“Most people associate omega-3s with fish,” says the science writer turned baker, “but fish get their omega-3s from plants.” The omega-3s in Susie’s Smart Cookies comes from canola oil, walnuts and ground flax, three plants that are rich in these nutrients.
Susie’s Smart Cookies come in two tasty varieties: the original Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie and the Breakfast Cookie. Both are all natural and have at least one gram of omega-3s in each cookie. The Breakfast Cookie is a complete, satisfying breakfast loaded with fruit and two grams of these heart-healthy fats.
Susie’s Smart Cookies are available for sale online (www.susiesmartcookie.com) and in selected coffee and gourmet stores, including Oren’s Daily Roast in NYC.
